For the last blog of 2019, I thought I’d share another commission I received from my friend Trish. There’s something so satisfying about a repeat customer and Trish offered me a rather interesting commission. She had been so pleased by the design I had created for her and her husband Gregg, she wanted me to create a design for her brother and his wife for a Christmas gift. The catch? Well, he was a biologist working with western fisheries and his wife worked for forestry. So, somehow I needed to incorporate fish and trees in a Celtic/Medieval design. Easy, right?
The first thing I did was submit six thumbnail sketches to Trish from which she chose two drawings to take to finished pencils. I stuck with this small sample as time was tight to get to a final design.
Originally, Trish also hoped that the design would be printed on sweatshirts as a crest-like image. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the specific style and colour of shirts she preferred so she opted for an art print instead.
So, here are the finished pencils for the two designs she favoured. Look below for her final choice and how it looks as an art print.
Happily, Trish was very pleased with the results and a custom print was made. I held off on sharing this project until after Christmas because it was commissioned as a gift. I have to admit I was surprised when I was able to come up with a design I quite like. I mean – Oak Trees and Trout?! Not a combination that would occur to me…yet it works. Just goes to show that sometimes being open to something out of the ordinary can lead to an eye-opening lesson. Go figure!
Well, I’ll take this spot to wish everyone a fantastic New Year! If you’re looking for out-of-the-box designs, check out our store and hopefully you’ll find something like a t-shirt, journal, stickers, phone cases, tote bags and even shower curtains and bath mats to start 2020 off with a bang! May it be one of the best years yet.
